Phli had woken up in a hospital bed some time after Loki had stabbed him and he'd accepted that he'd been about to die. He'd made peace and then... he'd woken up, groggy and in pain. He had no idea how long it had been, but it seemed to be a miracle that he was even alive.
For a while, he couldn't stay awake very long, but when he finally could, he started asking for Clint and Natasha. Things were still fuzzy. It took a while for him to remember that Clint had been brainwashed, that Natasha had been fighting him. Maybe when they were telling him that his friends were unavailable, what they meant was that they were dead. That was the first time he tried to escape, but he didn't even make it to the door before he collapsed from the pain. So he waited until he was a little better and tried again. He had to be wrestled down by three junior agents. After that, they strapped him down for his own safety.
When Clint showed up, he wondered if they had switched him to the good stuff. They must have because the Hulk was there, too, and he was listening to Clint. That couldn't be right. In any case, he just let himself go with the delusions. They were better than reality. They had Clint and a Hulk that wasn't trying to kill either of them. It was almost nice...
He startled awake in the safe house, but he didn't sit up right away. Even mostly healed, he was still sore all over and incredibly groggy. "...Clint?" He pushed himself up on his elbows slowly. "Clint, what's going... Is that Doctor Banner?" Oh, God, it was real. He stared at Bruce. "Was the Hulk actually listening to you?"
